This paper describes the main considerations regarding to the improvement process of the current design of a wearable non-invasive blood pressure monitor (NIBP) prototype that has been developed for ambulatory applications. A new-complementary electronic circuit stage and the most feasible data acquisition and signal processing strategies to be explored are described. These new elements must be adopted in order to get for this device wider flexibility and higher accuracy features. A better and more comprehensive performance can be reached trough the integration of a microphone on the patient’s arm in the antecubital fossa, Korotkoff sounds can be derived and subsequent signal processing and component analysis will permit to obtain new additional information about the blood pressure value. The renewed design will contribute to the achievement of a better measurement element-node, exhibiting higher reliability and having robustness capabilities enough to become integrated to a broader range of stand-alone and networked wireless healthcare monitoring applications.
