Resumen

Identify the patterns of developmental delays in children can aid in the early diagnoses of neurodevelopmental disorders and help anticipate the overall outcome of a child’s disability. In clinical applications a paper-and-pencil test is used to explore the three major domains of development 1) speech and language, 2) motor and 3) sensory. Our aims were design an easy management tool for screening of neurodevelopmental disorders in large populations and to incorporate new items to explore the sensory system. The new system software was implemented upon a mobile device personal digital assistant (PDA). It allows a brief, formal and standardized evaluation of the major domains of development and a new auditory and visual stimulation, providing a finally objective PASS/FAIL result. The software was implemented, using the integrated development environment Visual Studio 2008, Visual C# programming language, and the .Net Compact Framework. We achieved to save the test results in a PDA database and exported to a desktop PC to enable further analysis. Also, the item test can be configured taking into account the PDA features. Our system as any other screening tool does not provide a diagnosis, it helps to identify those children who need a directing to a neurodevelopmental diagnosis. The NPED system was implemented as new hand-held automated screening tool to be applied by paramedical personnel.
